Finnish design genius Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) found creative inspiration in wild and harsh nature. Spending his days in a small cabin deep in the Finnish forests, he sought a magical connection with nature and the processes at work within it. It was here that the most remarkable forms and concepts of his creations were conceived, capturing the essence of untouched materials with incredible sensitivity.
Among Tapio's most renowned glass collections is ULTIMA THULE. Inspired by the transformation of melting ice seen in the far north, the designer endeavoured to give glass a similar appearance. Challenging the conventional rules of glassblowing, Wirkkala devoted over 1,000 hours to experimenting and attempting to replicate nature's flawless creations. The ULTIMA THULE collection features shapes that are not overly rigid, resembling melted forms, and a distinctive surface structure that captures the laws and essence of northern nature to perfection.
The ULTIMA THULE red wine glasses are ideal for those who appreciate originality and new experiences. The broad stem of the glass enhances the design with a primal beauty, feeling pleasant in the hand, and its simple base design evokes the steel vessels of medieval halls.
