One of the most renowned glass collections designed by Tapio is ULTIMA THULE. The transformation of melting ice observed in the distant north inspired the designer to experiment and shape glass in a similar form. Disregarding the traditional rules of glassblowing , Wirkkala devoted over 1,000 hours to experimentation, attempting to replicate nature's flawless creations. ULTIMA THULE collection pieces have fluid, semi-melted forms and a distinctive surface texture that perfectly embodies the principles and essence of northern nature.
