Finnish design genius Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) found creative inspiration in wild and harsh nature. Spending his days in a small cabin deep in the Finnish forests, he sought a magical connection with nature and the processes at work within it. It was here that the most remarkable forms and concepts of his creations were conceived, capturing the essence of untouched materials with incredible sensitivity.
Among Tapio's most renowned glass collections is ULTIMA THULE. Inspired by the transformation of melting ice seen in the far north, the designer endeavoured to give glass a similar appearance. Challenging the conventional rules of glassblowing, Wirkkala devoted over 1,000 hours to experimenting and attempting to replicate nature's flawless creations. The ULTIMA THULE collection features softly moulded, seemingly melted forms and a uniquely textured surface that embodies the laws and spirit of northern nature.
The ULTIMA THULE 200 mm bowl is a versatile serving piece for a variety of dishes and an eye-catching table ornament, bringing a touch of Scandinavian coolness into a cosy home setting. The frosted glass relief creates striking contrasts, making it ideal for presenting colourful salads or desserts.
