Christmas Wreath Weaving Guide with ferm LIVING
Part #2: Breathing in Beauty and Peace
Weave your festive tales with a Christmas wreath
1st DECEMBER 2023
As the festive period draws near, doors, windows, and interior spaces in homes gradually get adorned with ornaments that encapsulate the spirit of Christmas. Wreaths on doors are the first signs of the festivities, welcoming guests and reminding us of the joys of cosy gatherings and community. This year, one of Denmark's most welcoming brands, ferm LIVING, encourages you to craft a unique Christmas wreath using the precise geometry of the copper DECO FRAME ring combined with your creative flair.
To inspire even more confidence, ferm LIVING invited florist and Blooming studio founder Anne-Mette Trolle to share her insights and inspiration. A graduate from the Danish Design University, Anne-Mette merged her passion for fashion and plants, establishing the Blooming floristry studio in Copenhagen in 1996. Today, Blooming has four locations in and around Copenhagen.
For a classic-style wreath, Anne-Mette chose the following plants:
Roof houseleek – in as many different sizes as possible.
Date fruit bunches – feel free to use whole bunches or divide into smaller sections.
Umbellifer plants (e.g. Laserwort) – should be robust and thoroughly dried.
Blue spruce – its branches naturally arch beautifully, just choose the direction you wish.
Juniper – boasts a delightful scent and isn't brittle, making it ideal for dried flower arrangements.
Mimosa – visually resembles conifers, but is distinctly different.
Thuja – dynamic branches resembling small chicken feet add vibrancy to the composition.
"For a more classic image, I chose materials associated with the traditional Christmas season: diverse conifers in type and colour, houseleeks, mimosas, and clusters of berries, which lend a dreamy blue to the composition." Anne-Mette Trolle
Tools you need for weaving a wreath:
– Ring DECO FRAME from ferm LIVING. Anne-Mette used the smaller version, but for a more impressive wreath, confidently choose the L DECO FRAME ring.
– Brass wire. You may also use steel, but a warmer wire shade is a more complementary colour choice.
– Garden shears or wire cutters.
1. Select and prepare your materials.
2. Secure the wire end to the surface of the DECO FRAME ring, tightening it with a knot.
3. Next, take your selected plants one by one and affix them to the DECO FRAME foundation using wire. Wrap the wire around the plants snugly but be careful not to damage the stems.
4. Methodically attach all the foliage and decorative elements, one after the other. Bear in mind that varying sizes of elements create a pleasing rhythm in the composition and bring it to life.
5. Use wire to pierce through the centre of the roof houseleek and twist the ends around each other. Affix the prepared plant to the wreath's base—the DECO FRAME ring.
6. Rely on your intuition and decide when your wreath is complete! Leave a section of the DECO FRAME ring bare—it adds aesthetic balance and the elegance of precious metal to your design.
7. The DECO FRAME set includes a ribbon you can use for hanging the wreath. Tie the ribbon ends into a bow or let them fall naturally amongst the plant branches.
8. Adorn doors, windows, or walls with the Christmas wreath.
That's it—a wreath radiating beauty and tranquility is now yours! Wishing you warm and cosy festivities.
