Swedish designer Greta M. Grossman (1906–1999) opened many doors that had long been closed to women. She was the first woman to receive an official award for furniture design and one of the first to establish her own design studio. In 1940, she emigrated to the United States with her husband, British jazz musician Billy Grossman. Settling in California, she became a pioneer of Scandinavian design on the West Coast. After founding her creative studio on Rodeo Drive, Greta rose to fame, attracting a clientele that included Hollywood icons such as Greta Garbo and Frank Sinatra.
