George Sowden studied architecture at the Gloucestershire College of Art. In the 1970s, he moved to Milan, where he worked with renowned names such as Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In the 1980s, he became one of the founding members of the Memphis Group design collective. Sowden has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the prestigious Compasso d'Oro.
