With countless combinations, the versatile Teema line can easily adapt to ever-changing serving needs. Teema dishes are suitable for cooking and can also be safely used in the oven, though it is advisable not to exceed a temperature of 240 degrees. Teema products are also great for serving, storing, and even freezing food. The core design concept was to create products from three basic shapes: a circle, square, and rectangle. According to designer Kaj Franck, colour is the only necessary decoration.
This is the heritage of Scandinavian design. Perfectly complements Kartio and other Iittala collections, these dishes with their simple and distinct lines can easily mix with what you have at home.
Imagine a consumer from the 1940s envisioning how their new traditional dinner service should appear. The set, during that era, generally consisted of approximately 30 to 72 pieces, including a large soup serving bowl. The main focus was to have a specific piece for each product to meet various needs.
What Kaj Franck did was practically the complete opposite of the current trends. He identified the needs and then created the smallest possible set to meet all essential serving requirements with a minimal number of dishes, introducing multifunctionality into lifestyle and mindset. In the 1950s, he introduced just eight pieces. Today, Iittala offers 22 products inspired by this concept.
The Teema collection is crafted from vitro porcelain, one of the hardest types, and is available in modern styles with shades of ivory white and other colours. The fundamental, longest standing colours are white and blue, produced since 1952, and black, which was introduced in 2009. Mainstay colours in the collections endure, whereas short-term colours may change every few years, sometimes annually. Since Iittala's philosophy centres on longevity, the colours not only evolve over years but frequently return to the market unchanged after a few years. Natural colours foster harmony and stability in an otherwise unstable world. The primary purpose of attractive colours is to capture attention and inspire the consumer.
The collection, radical for its time, was originally introduced in early 1952 as 'Kilta'. It re-entered the collection in 1981 under the new name 'Teema'.
