Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was a Danish artist who lived and worked in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he trained as a ceramicist, painter, and poster designer.
Known for his cheerful spirit and love of company and celebration, Wiinblad stood out both as a person and an artist. His signature style – characterized by flowing lines, vivid colors, and whimsical portraits – was a bold departure from the restrained aesthetics typical of Scandinavian design. Unsurprisingly, he faced criticism and misunderstanding in Denmark for many years. However, in 1957, Wiinblad joined the renowned German porcelain company Rosenthal, and his work gradually gained international recognition – eventually earning appreciation at home as well.
In 1985, Wiinblad was named Man of the Year in New York, and his art has since been featured in exhibitions at some of the world’s most prestigious museums.
BJØRN WIINBLAD is now part of the ROSENDAHL DESIGN GROUP. In 2014, the group revived the legacy of this extraordinary artist and launched the brand BJØRN WIINBLAD 2.0. His illustrations were given new life - still brimming with joyful creativity and serving as a vibrant reminder of Denmark’s rich cultural heritage.
