BIRDS 1967 decoration
Lisa Larson’s birds have been inhabiting her studio since 1967. Almost forgotten among the many other gems created by the celebrated Swedish ceramicist, they have now “taken flight” once again, revived by Design House Stockholm.
“In 1967 we stayed for half a year near the bay in Sausalito, close to San Francisco,” Lisa Larson recalls. “I studied ceramics with Peter Voulkos at Berkeley. I was surrounded by strong colors and exotic patterns inspired by Mexican folk art from nearby. I simply began painting these birds, without any idea of how they would be produced.”
The late 1960s in the United States were marked by anti-war protests and a flourishing hippie culture. Flower Power emerged as a response to repression, signaling the rise of individualism and total freedom of expression. It was during this vividly inspired era that Lisa Larson’s colorful flock of birds came to life—a time when vibrant music burst forth and a young generation took over the stage.
